Here is a list of all known hardcodes in Rome: Total War. Hardcodes are limits within the game that cannot be exceeded or broken. If you aren't sure why your modded files aren't working, there is a chance a hardcode may be preventing the changes occurring. They will often cause a direct CTD (Crash To Desktop) on startup or loading of battle. Specific campaign files will often just cause a CTM (Crash To Menu) when trying to begin a campaign.
If you know any more hardcodes that aren't here, please share them in this thread. All input is appreciated.
- Miscellaneous Hardcodes
- There is a limit of 21 factions. This must include the rebels as one faction.
- Walls must be in a complete ring. i.e no seaside towns.
- Models have a maximum limit of 20,000 faces/polys
The following hardcodes are specific to certain files.
- export_descr_ancillaries.txt
- ExcludedAncillaries: Min 0, max 3. Any extras will cause a CTM.
- export_descr_buildings.txt
- Overall building tree number: Maximum of 64. Extras will cause a CTD.
- Levels per building tree: Minimum of 1. Maximum of 9.
- Hidden resources: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 63 (Possibly 64, but that may cause problems)
- Units buildable per city: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 32. Excludes agents. Default usage. Extras cause a CTD.
- export_descr_character_trait.txt
- Levels per trait: Minimum of 1. Maximum of 9.
- Points required for a threshold: Minimum of 1. Maximum of 600.
- Points assignable per trigger: Minimum of 0. Maximum of 100.

- Extras per unit: Minimum of 2, but 0 is also acceptable if there are none. Extras means pigs, dogs, chariots, elephants, etc.
- Officers per unit: Minimum of 0. Maximum of 3
- Collision mass: Maximum of 100.
- Mount effects per unit: Maximum of 3. Text file description.
- Number of formations: Minimum of 1 Maximum of 2. Text file description.
- Hitpoints: Minimum of 1, Maximum of 15. Any extra is considered as 15 by the game.
- Attack factor: Minimum of 1, Maximum of 63. Any extra is considered as 63 by the game.
- Charge bonus: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 63. Any extra is considered as 63 by the game.
- Missile range: Minimum of 20. The maximum varies dependng on the projectile type. This maximum range is set by the velocity in descr_projectile_new.txt. A higher velocity means further range.
- Missile Ammunition: Minimum of 2. If there is no missile, 0 is acceptable.
- Armor factor: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 63. Any extra is considered as 63 by the game.
- Defensive skill factor: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 63. Any extra is considered as 63 by the game.
- Shield factor: Minimum of 0, Maximum of 31. Any extra is considered as 31 by the game.
- Base morale: Minimum of 0. Maximum Unknown.
- Turns to build: Minimum of 1, Maximum of 244. Any extra is considered as 244 by the game.
- Animals (Pigs/Dogs): Cannot be used in conjuction with a mount. Cannot be given to units that require a secondary attack (ie. Missile troops and phalanx spearmen).
- descr_terrain (This sets dimensions of map_regions and other map_* files.)
- Max width: 500
- Max height: 500
- Other maps' dimensions can not exceed their ratio to map regions. (E.g. map_heights: max 1001 X 1001).
- map_regions.tga
- The number of provinces is limited to 200. However, this includes the sea as one province.
- The number of landmasses is limited to 20.
As stated, this list is not necessarily exhaustive, but does cover the majority of common known hardcodes.
